Simon’s solar installation

Simon Rowley’s conservation area installation

Challenge

The overriding concern with this project was adhering to the planning regulations for a conservation area. Other essential roof repairs were also needed during the installation.

Solution

Joju Solar applied for and obtained a government grant on behalf of Simon. Joju Solar executed the installation project in conjunction with other essential roof repairs, demanding a high level of project management and coordination. Joju Solar ensured that the PV system, was installed flush with the existing roof, adhering to conservation guidelines for Ealing. This type of system is ideal for anyone re-roofing or undertaking new building work.

“I just thought I should record at this stage how pleased I am with the job that you did for me. Thank you!”

A great invesment for Chris

Chris Robbins best ever invest investment was solar

Why did you choose solar?

“I had been looking at getting a solar PV system fitted for a while to help reduce his electricity usage and to reduce my carbon footprint. After contacting Joju Solar a member of your Residential team came to visit my property to assess the suitability of my roof and to better understand my needs.”

Solution

After the site visit Chris decided to go ahead with a Sharp 245W PV panel installation. The final system design consisted of 10 Sharp 245W PV panels on a SB 2500 SMA inverter. The 2.45kW system will produce 2,060kWh per annum with a carbon saving of over 1.09 tonnes. Chris will be able to produce clean green electricity, future proof against rising energy costs and make savings on his electricity bills.

“Apart from the bees’ nest in the roof – which wasn’t Joju Solar’s fault everything was done very smoothly with little disruption. The panels are generating even more than was promised. This is probably the best investment I have made – much better than I was getting from the bank.”

Ashok’s Birthday Solar

Ashok Patel’s birthday solar installation

Why did you choose solar?

“I wanted to reduce reliance on electricity from the grid and reduce my energy bills. After researching solar I decided it would not only reduce my electricity bills, but it would also be a good investment to leave to my family for the future.”
Challenge

To install the largest system possible on the roof space available and complete the installation for Ashok’s birthday as planned.

Solution

Understanding the customer’s requirements and objectives are important to ensure the best system and that it meets the customer’s expectations. Joju Solar worked closely with Ashok and designed a system to maximise the capacity given the limited roof space available. Savings on electricity bills and a decrease in reliance on electricity from the grid allowed Ashok to future proof against rising energy costs. Ashok was pleased with his system and very happy to have his legacy to pass onto his children, but most of all Ashok enjoyed that the installation was completed on his 76th birthday.

“I am very happy with my new solar PV system. After speaking to many other solar companies I was very impressed with the way Joju Solar answered all my questions. They gave me the exact system I was after and the installation was completed without any problems.”

Nicky’s Grand Design

Nicky Michaels’ dream house was featured in Grand Designs Magazine

Why did you choose solar?

“Being eco-friendly was really important to the house build and we knew that solar panels were going to play a part in helping us keep our carbon footrprint down and ensure that our home really was an eco-home. We also had to make sure that any renewable technologies we put in would not impact our design. This was absolutely critical.”

Challenge

We had to design and install a system that not only provided Nicky and her husband Tony with the maximum generation from their system but also kept to the restrictions of being in a conservation area. The first system was installed in 2007 and was completed through the grants available from the government. Nicky and Tony decided that they wanted another system installed so they could take advantage of the Feed-in Tariff. The second installation required us to move the first system and put the new system in its place, as this would allow the system to generate the most electricity being in the ideal location in terms of pitch and direction.

Solution

We dealt with several obstacles by creating our own bespoke ballasted mounting system and arranging our installation around glass ceilings, a green roof and restrictive planning position. The two systems have provided Nicky and Tony with electricity to power their dream home whilst also being able to take advantage of the Feed-in Tariff. The Michaels’ home was even featured on the cover of Grand Design Magazines.

“Joju Solar provided a great service with both installs. Service was good, the system was installed and working from day one”

Dick and Nina’s Solar delight

Dick and Nina Dendy thought their shed roof was too small for solar

Why did you decide to choose solar?

“We went to a lecture that was given by Joju solar and were impressed, there was no sell but a comprehensive explanation on how PVC’s worked. After some thought we went ahead and installed the panels, and 3 weeks before they were put up we had a phone call from Joju solar to say that they had a cheaper source for the panels and reduced our bill by £1,000, and it is that honesty that we found very impressive. Also they are always on the end of the line when needed and are most helpful.”

Challenge

Dick and Nina lived in a ground floor flat so they were limited to where they were able to have panels installed. Joju Solar arranged for a Residential Project Manager to visit and to discuss possible solutions.

Solution

After discussions and a site survey it was agreed that the panels could be fitted to their shed, due to the size of the shed there was a limit to how many panels would fit but The final system consisted of 5 Sharp 185W panels. The system produces 796kWh per annum with 0.42 tonnes of carbon dioxide saved and estimated annual benefit of £393.

“Financially we are glad we installed them. They went up in Feb and we have had 3 cheques since then which has reduced the sum we pay out each month.”

Reading Borough Council

Reading Borough Council takes a lead on solar PV.

Reading Borough Council was one of the first UK local authorities to spot the opportunity of solar energy when they installed solar photovoltaic systems on 43 public buildings back in 2011

Once Reading Borough Council had proved that solar PV could work on their corporate buildings, the next step was to look at their social housing stock. Could they make an investment that would produce an acceptable rate of return, reduce fuel poverty and cut the council’s carbon footprint?

Careful design
As genuine solar experts, Joju Solar understood that getting the most from Reading’s investment meant:
carrying out an accurate assessment of roofs;
finding the right balance of fixed and variable costs when deciding system size; and
selecting the right components to secure the best system for the price.

Joju Solar conducted a full desktop survey of all potential properties, identifying the 450 roofs most suitable for the systems. The final proposal comprised nearly 7,000 panels with a total generation capacity of 1.67 MWp – equivalent to powering 720,000 smartphones for an entire year.

Happy Tenants
Joju Solar had considerable experience of tenant liaison, developed during previous social housing contracts, and worked closely with the council to generate awareness and enthusiasm for the project. Both partners knew that, to have the greatest impact, tenants had to understand what was going on and appreciate the benefits that they stood to gain.

Cllr Richard Davies, Reading’s Lead Member for Housing, said: “We worked very hard to select the houses according to their suitability for solar panels, but in fact all tenants benefited from the project because those whose homes did not fit the criteria were provided with help to find other ways to reduce their energy consumption and their fuel bills.”

Smooth installation
Using installation teams and project managers with experience from previous social housing projects, Joju set about installing 450 PV systems in three months.

Solar PV – a quadruple win
The Reading project has attracted positive coverage in the local press. Joju Solar Founder and Commercial Director, Joe Michaels, is delighted: “Solar PV is a quadruple win for social housing landlords like Reading,” he says. “It provides a guaranteed financial return, an extension on roofing life, assistance with fuel poverty targets, and carbon savings.”
