Secure a home for swifts alongside your solar

At Joju, we’re passionate about helping people save money on their energy bills, cut carbon emissions, and do our bit for nature too. One of the ways we’re making a difference is by offering swift boxes alongside your solar PV installation.

More about swifts

Swifts (Apus apus) are extraordinary birds. They spend almost their entire lives in flight… eating, sleeping, even mating on the wing, rarely touching the ground. Each year they migrate 7,000 miles from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe, returning to nest under the eaves of homes all across Europe.

However, swifts are in trouble. In Britain, their numbers fell by two-thirds between 1995 and 2022, and they have continued to decline ever since. It’s estimated that just 40,000 breeding pairs remain and unless we act, that number could drop below 25,000 in just five years. They are now on the UK’s Red List of Bird of Conservation Concern.

How can we help?

One major reason for their decline is the loss of nesting sites. Modern roof insulation has sealed up gaps swifts have used for centuries. That’s where we can make a difference. Whilst our scaffolding is up to install your solar PV, we can retrofit wooden swift boxes just below your eaves. These boxes provide a safe nesting cavity at the right height (at least 4.5m from the ground, and ideally not facing south).

Bring swifts home

For around £60, you can add a swift box to your installation and turn your home into a safe haven for one of Britain’s most iconic birds. It’s a small step that makes a big impact.
