powerwall 3 mounted on a wall

Tesla Powerwall 3 has arrived!

It’s a big one for battery storage! Tesla has officially launched the Powerwall 3 in the UK (19th June, 2024), and we can’t wait to start installing it for you! Here are the key things you need to know, as well as a special introductory price throughout July:

Specification ‘at a glance’

What’s new in Powerwall 3?

Tesla says there’s ‘More Power. More Savings. More Backup’ and on these key elements, the Powerwall 3 delivers. Let’s take a deeper look at how.

1. A built in solar inverter

Unlike Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter. There’s an AC-coupled option for retrofit (if you’ve already got an existing solar PV system with an inverter), but for new installs the integrated inverter means the system is DC-coupled. Why is this good news? Well, the solar connects directly into the battery where it is stored, before being converted to AC electricity as and when it is needed in the home. This reduces the number of conversions between AC and DC electricity and will improve the overall efficiency of storage, from 90% up to 97.5%. That means more electricity for use in your home!

As the direct connection of solar to the battery removes the need for a separate solar inverter, you’ll save on cost too.

Powerwall 3 also has 3 separate solar inputs (MPPT’s)  for maximum flexibility. Most residential scale solar inverters only have 2. Three will come in handy if you’ve got a roof with multiple aspects (say, south, east, and west facing), as the new unit supports installations on up to 3 different orientations. That makes it easier to use all your roof space and it can help with shade mitigation too.

2. Increased Power output

The new version of the Powerwall will have the same 13.5 kWh of energy storage as the Powerwall 2. However, it will now be able to put out up to 11.04 kW of power, instead of 5 kW of power. With 11.04 kW’s it’ll be able to meet even the highest loads in the home, including showers and even heat pumps. As Tesla say, it will ‘Power Everything’.

3. Active thermal management

Powerwall 3 comes with a. redesigned active thermal management system, to enhance performance and efficiency. You can still remotely monitor your energy flow via the Tesla app, and adjust your Powerwall from anywhere. You can also optimise performance with analysis of historical energy use data and forecasts, so it’s easy to set the best time to charge your battery, store solar energy, or export it to the grid. Basically, it’s all about bringing your bills down by managing your energy in the most efficient way possible.

Powerwall 3 is also compatible with Octopus Intelligent Tariffs like Octopus Flux.

4. Whole-home Back-up and storm watch

Naturally, the new Powerwall will be able to back-up your supply in the event of a power cut – and with increased backup power, it backs up more items at the same time. With a power output of up to 11.04kW, you’ll be able to keep more of your household appliances running.

And Powerwall 3 is always on ‘storm watch’! This means the unit will automatically charge to maximum storage capacity when severe weather is forecast, making sure you have maximum backup protection.

As you can see from the spec, it’s designed to perform over some pretty large temperature ranges too.

5. Battery chemistry

Tesla uses Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) for Powerwall 3 – a change from the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) used in Powerwall 2. LFP is said to have a longer life-cycle and improved cell degradation, as well as being considered more sustainable.

6. Warranty

The battery will come with an industry leading 10-year warranty, all-inclusive with unlimited
cycles. After 10 years it’s 80% energy retention and 100% depth of discharge.

7. Easy system expansion

Here’s something to look forward to. Soon, you’ll be able to add expansion packs to your Powerwall 3 as well, to increase your energy storage. You can add up to 4 units with 40.5 kWh max addition per unit. These are designed to be “plug and play” meaning they’re cheaper and more straightforward to install than an additional Powerwall 3.

You won’t be able to extend a Powerwall 2 system with the Powerwall 3, so if you’ve already purchased and are thinking of upgrading, the classic Powerwall 2 will be your best bet.  Want some inspiration?  You can see some of our hundreds of Tesla installations here.
