Solar for your home

With solar PV you can turn your home into a solar power station and send your electricity company a bill every month. Now that’s a sunny thought.

How much electricity will my roof produce?

The size of your roof will largely determine the amount of energy that you can produce. Put simply, the bigger your roof, the more panels you can fit onto it and the more electricity you can produce.

Other important factors are your roof’s ‘pitch’ and ‘orientation’.

A due South facing roof is the best.  Similarly, a standard pitched roof (about 40 degrees) will give you more electricity than a flat roof.

But even if your roof faces East or West, or you have a flat roof, then you can still produce lots of solar electricity.

You may be very surprised to know that even an East or West facing flat roof can produce 90% of the electricity that a perfectly oriented roof would produce.

Other things that we will look out for are any obstacles that might shade your roof. When we survey your house and design your system we use specialist solar PV software to ensure that we arrange your panels to minimise shading and make  sure you get the most you possibly can from the sun’s energy.

How much can my roof earn me?

Send us details of your roof and we will give you an estimate of how many units of electricity it will produce each year and therefore how much money it will make you.

Overall though, for every unit of electricity that your solar PV system produces you will be paid 21p. In addition you will make 3p extra for the electricity that you don’t use and that you export to the grid.

But what makes them such a good investment is that the payments are guaranteed by law for 25 years and that the payments are inflation linked.

This means that if you  put your panels up in 2012 you will be paid every year until 2037 at a guaranteed rate that is not eroded by inflation.

That’s a pretty sunny thought.
